::: Nexus ::: "6"

industrial-gothic-electro-rock

Nexus come to you from the lap of the Gods (Greece). It is the new project of Mike Pouigianis who was formerly in the Flowers of Romance, a band which achieved a fair degree of success in Europe. They even had an album produced by Wayne Husey (Sisters of Mercy and the Mission). However, the flowering career of F.O.R., like so many other bands, was cut short by the unethical and exploitative behaviour of certain record labels. Thus, Nexus has risen, as a phoenix from the flames of F.O.R., to be a fiercely independent project, determined to make their way without help from larger labels.

The thing I appreciate the most about the music on "6", is the successful coming together of a diversity of influences and genres. Some tracks are up-tempo contemporary industrial-pop, with chugging guitars and driving rhythms, while others are melancholy yet moody ballads driven by harpsichords, other keys and warbling guitars. Mike's husky and crooning vocals are sung in Greek, which I find very refreshing - first greek band I've heard! I assume many European bands feel the commercial pressure to sing in English, but I especially admire those who stick to their native tongues, much more interesting musically. Of course, I appreciate that many (boring!) people prefer to hear English vocals.

But back to the music, track 6, "Magic Night" is something altogether different: a wonderful instrumental of cruising jazzy electronica with strong references to 1970s psychedelic lounge music. Excellent stuff. My favourite track, however, is track 9 "A day with no clouds" with it's subdued mix of 80s electronica, semi-tribal percussion, sitar-like guitars, and impassioned vocals. Also, track 7, "Heaven might be waiting" with it's mellow funkiness, engaging vocals, psychedelic guitars, and sweeping orchestrations. In all, 12 tracks span 57 minutes. If you're in a band who desires to remain independent, or at least be educated about the sneaky ways of record labels, get in touch with Mike, as he's as keen as I, even more so, to educate folk about the pitfalls and dangers of the music industry. Moreover, to try and build up an alternative to the stranglehold that labels have had over bands in the past.

You can obtain the CD for ?????? care of their own label, Cyberdelia Records: 129, Plastira str., 171 22 Nea Smyrni, Athens Greece, tel./fax: + + 30 1 9484083 E-mail: [email protected] or [email protected] Web http://www.cyberdelia.com
