::: Coven 13 ::: "Book of Shadows"
pagan rock opera goth ballads.
From Salem, USA, known for the farcical and horrifying witch-inquisitions
of past centuries, Coven 13 fittingly focus on the themes of love and
the magic of life from a Pagan perspective. I guess Salem-folk don't
have to worry about being burnt at the stake these days for being so
positive and life-love-affirming!
This conceptual album features many ballads and plays like a rock-opera
with strong 1970s influences. This is particularly evident in Teisen
Russel's engaging croon. He sure can hit those notes and vibrato. This
man can SING! The instrumentation consists of occasional guitar outbursts,
Amanda Adams delightful piano accompaniments and appropriate percussion.
Their live shows sound like quite a theatrical event, with a royal court
atmosphere of jugglers and dancers to accompany the music. To be whisked
away to a magical dream-world of love, tragedy and mystery, this CD
is the recipe. 13 tracks over 56 minutes.
