music review:

Blacklight Braille ::: "Carbonek"

folk-psychedelic-weirdness

Kindly forwarded to me by Mick Magic of the "Music & Elsewhere" cassette label/CD distro this is one hell of a quirky collection of quirky music. 15 Musicians make up this underground music venture. "Dissonant" is the word to describe most of it. At times it's folk-influenced, at others it's reminiscent of Grateful Dead, ... heavily influenced by the late 1960s.

A mixture of keyboard plonkings, clanging percussion, psychedelic flutes, Jerry Garcia guitar parts, odd vocals which I can't quite describe, and more. My favourite bits are the dreamy non-dissonant ambient pieces like "the Fountain Falling from the ace of cups" which I could happily play on repeat. To be honest, I can't quite digest the dissonance in the rest of the album. I've read of King Arthur, Camelot, medieval themes being present in Braille's music, and there are a few titles that allude to that here. Quite theatrical. The only other stuff I've heard like this is early Tom Waits.

More B.B. releases are available from the M&E/UWU label - see the review of "MMATT" for the M&E/UWU postal address.
