music review:

Alien Headspace ::: Genre Crimes

techno-trance

Paul Bambury is the mastermind of this project (though there are several collaborations) as well being 1/2 of the ambient outfit Trancendental Anarchists. Overall the music is slow and groovey lounge-electro-trance that is bold enough to include occasional real (!) wah-wah guitars and dubby bass. Some tracks even contain very subdued transient mellow male vocals which by and large work quite well. Though there are a few tracks where the vocals don't quite work for me. They could be enhanced by a bit of extra production or perhaps re-recording in a better studio.

My personal favourites are "all it takes", the relatively upbeat "dyslexia" which has an 80s retro feel (bit like Kraftwerk and early techno-house), "Starstream", and the more contemporary, darker sounding doof of "Gravy Train" (which I suspect may be due to the collaboration with Will Martina). The minimal electro of some tracks remind me of groups like Psychic Warriors of Gaia, Overall, though, it reminds me of the original waves of early 90s British techno-pop groups like The Grid. 15 tracks span 64 minutes.
